STRAP-ONS?? STRAP IN!!

With the country having been in lockdown and most avenues for entertainment having to close their doors, more and more people were creating their own at home. Let’s face it, Netflix and learning to bake bread from YouTube videos will only go so far, so is it any wonder that people began to get in touch with their naughty side? (pun very much intended!). We have sent out vibrators, fleshlights, nipple clamps and condoms by the hundreds, hoping to keep the people of Ireland titillated and satisfied.. However it soon came to our attention that one particular toy has increased in popularity and that is the STRAP-ON, hence the title!

Not much is known about the history of strap-ons, though evidence found in Ancient China and Greece and even in the Karma Sutra, has lead experts to believe that dildos could have been attached to straps! 

Strap-ons are one of the most versatile toys on the market. This is due to to the variety of reason they are used, the different harnesses that can be worn and the many different dildos that are available. 

WHY ARE STRAP-ONS USED?

    • Sex between women: Strap-ons allow a woman to penetrate her partner and add another level of play.
    • Pegging: This is when a woman penetrates a man anally. Though this has been practiced for centuries it was first named by Dan Savage after a he held a contest through his advice column “Savage Love” after realizing there wasn’t a term for this type of play. While still considered a bit on the taboo side, pegging is coming more and more into the mainstream.
    • Erectile Issues: Men experiencing erectile issues can use a hollow strap-on, placing their penis inside a hollow dildo so they can still experience penetrative sex with their partner.
    • Transgender People: Transgender men might use a strap on if they have not undergone surgery. 
    • Double Penetration: This strap-on can be worn by a man. It has space for his penis and a dildo that sits just above. This allows him to penetrate a female partner both vaginally and anally. Strap-ons can also have two dildos that allow a woman to penetrate her partner in the same way. 

When choosing which strap-on is right for you, having a look at which type of harness suits you is a must.

  • Two Straps: This looks like a g-string with a strap around the waist and the second going through the wearers legs and attached to the “belt” at the back. These straps are usually thin but adjustable,
  • Three Straps: Similar to the two strap harness, it has a strap going around the waist but this time with a strap going around each thigh and attaching to the front instead of the back. People find this harness to be more sturdy.
  • Underwear Harness: Like the name suggests, this harness looks like underwear, mostly a thong. It has the dildo attached to the fabric at the front. Unlike the strap harness, it doesn’t have methods to be able to adjust it, the harness is made using very stretchy elastic material to accommodate different sizes. Very easy to put on and off.
  • Strapless: No harness is used at all. Instead an egg shaped bulb - or a smaller thicker dildo- can be inserted into the vagina or anus. This was both partners can feel deep penetration though it takes a lot of practice and strengthening of the muscles to be able to be used well.
  • Universal Harness: A harness that is sold without a dildo attached but instead comes with various ring sizes, that hold the dildo in place. Due to the different ring sizes it means that different sized and shaped dildos can be used, allowing for more options without having to buy multiple strap-ons.
  • Vac-U-Lock: Used by Doc Johnson, it is a vacuum seal that allows the dildo adhere tighter to the harness, allowing it to be more stable. Like the universal harness different dildos can be swapped out but they must be Vac-U-Lock compatible.

    • Dildo Types: There are as many types of strap-on dildos as there are dildos, to be honest. All different sizes, materials, vibrating, oscillating, the world is your oyster. It’s all about finding what works for you.
