5 Questions to ask when choosing your first anal sex toy | PlayBlue Ireland Blog

Choosing a first anal sex toy is a delicate operation and something that is easy to get wrong. For a lot of people it is a bit of a Rubicon to cross and once that anal play genie is out of the bottle will you ever be able to put it back? I doubt it.

In Ireland I would still suggest a bit of taboo lingers around anal play for men and women. At PlayBlue we will always support everyone's journey to discover personal sexual pleasure either in a relationship or solo and anal pleasure can open a whole new world of pleasure.

Before you pick an anal sex toy let me suggest a few questions you need to ponder to ensure you get it right.

1. Size REALLY matters in Anal Play - Please don’t bite off more then you can chew here. Too big is not something you want to start with. Size in anal toys takes practice and to be honest working up to larger toys is the true pleasure for some but for others a small little anal vibe is perfect.

First timers you need to go small and simple. You might discover within seconds this is not for you and I can promise you if your first experience is a huge anal plug it might even happen before it comes out of the box.

2. No ifs or buts you NEED good lube - I know us Irish can be terrible for buying lube but when it comes to anal play you just have no choice. I can guarantee if you try without you will not have a great experience. You do not naturally lubricate anally so without lubricant you are going to feel pain or at least a lot of discomfort. Pain is not the experience most of us are going for here.

There are loads of great anal lubes and relaxants. Personally I don’t suggest numbing or relaxants for first timers as it might encourage you to go too far too fast.

3. First Time - Keep it simple - Beginners you should be going for a simple anal plug or anal dildo. You are trying to explore the sensations of touch and movement and penetration anally. There is plenty of time to explore all the huge range of play options. Keep is simple to use something like a Silicone Anal Beads set of Silicone plug. The best first time anal toy is maybe a finger. The perfect sensitive size and control and free.

4. It’s Not a Race Slow Down - Take it super slowly and gently especially initially. You will naturally feel tense the first time and this will cause you to clamp up a bit. With Lube and a little gentle play and relaxed breathing it will get easier and easier. Take your time the idea here is to discover what feels great. If you try to go too far too fast you will hurt yourself or your partner and ruin the experience. It is also really good to be already super aroused prior to any anal play as you will be much more relaxed and ready to play.

5. Hygiene is extra important - Anal play is obviously going to mean more hygiene concerns are going to come into play. There are a few things to do in preparation. Anal Douching will mean you will be much cleaner in and out which might make for a more pleasant experience. Anal play has to be a little less spontaneous but this can mean a build in anticipation and possibly a pre-play shared shower - sounds good. Cleanup of toys and yourself after is also extra important.

Anal toys are a great adventure and might just be your perfect new pleasure. Please though do ensure any toys you use are flared or capped at the bottom to ensure it doesn’t get sucked up. This can be dangerous and potentially very embarrassing in A&E.

Remember we are not after pain here we are after pleasure. It might take a fair bit of play and experimentation to find what you really like and you’ll never stop learning. Keep playing and enjoy the journey.
