Butt plugs come in a variety of shapes and sizes and of course of different materials. Silicone, steel, glass and jelly all feel different to your body. The best choice for you is the one that fits your body, your requirements and fulfils your desires. So what material should YOUR butt plug be made of?
Most beginners want something soft and flexible first. Jelly and silicone seem to be the right choices for this requirement. The softer they are the more gentle they can feel to you. Jelly is usually a bit softer and it is cheap as well. Still silicone is sleeker. Both are compatible with water-based lubes only, not silicone. Presume that they are not compatible, when you don’t have anything stating otherwise.
It is also important to add here, that some silicone plugs are not necessarily very flexible. When you choose a butt plug with a vibrating core, the vibrator is hard and it is covered with smooth silicone, but it won’t be as soft and flexible as the ones without it. Also if you want a huge toy, for stability reasons they are going to be firmer as well.
Steel is also a very popular butt plug material for several reasons. They are compatible with any kind of lube, so you don’t have to choose between long lasting gliding and protecting the integrity of your toy.

Glass butt plugs are usually the last of the preference list. Lots of people are worried about safety. If you buy your glass butt plug from a legitimate source, it is made from borosilicate glass, which is extremely durable. They are lighter than steel toys, but other than that they have the same features. You can use any anal lube, you can clean them even in the dishwasher. They are perfect for temperature play, and in my opinion they glide in with more ease. Glass dildos are usually more rounded and it is easier to insert them. They can feel amazing.
Different bodies like different feelings, so this is not something you can decide, rather this is something you explore and discover. It can also happen that with time your body prefers different sensations and materials that at the beginning. Or sometimes when for example you go through a stressful period your body likes something else that you usually do. So stay open minded and allow your body to have different needs and preferences according to your mood, health, and emotional fluctuations.
