Where and how you store your sex toys matters more than most people realise. Even a thoroughly cleaned toy can become unhygienic if it's tossed in a drawer with other items or stored while still slightly damp.
Whether you have one bedside favourite or a growing collection, the right storage setup protects your toys, extends their lifespan, and means they're always fresh and ready when you want them.
Here's how to do it properly
- Always store your toys completely dry because moisture trapped can lead to bacteria and mould.
- Use individual soft bags, or a dedicated toy box with separate compartments.
- Silicone toys should not touch other silicone toys during storage because they can bond or degrade each other over time. So it is essential to keep them separately.
- Store your toys in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Your toys need to breathe slightly, so avoid storing them in airtight plastic bags.
- Keep toys away from dust. A soft bag or dedicated box does the job beautifully.
You love your toys, so it is natural that you want to enjoy them as long as you can and be sure that they are safe and hygienic to use.
What else can you do in order to protect your toys in the long run?
- Clean your toys before using them. (Yes, even brand new toys.) I have a whole post about cleaning your sex toys properly. Click here to read it.
- Use the right lubricant: water-based lube is safe for all materials. Silicone-based lube can degrade silicone toys.
- Remove batteries when storing battery-operated toys for extended periods.
- Don't leave your rechargeable toys on the charger indefinitely.
- Read the care instructions that come with your toy. Yes, actually read them.
When is it time to let your toys go?
Even with the best care, toys don't last forever. Here are the signs that it's time to say goodbye (and maybe treat yourself to something new):
- When the surface of the toy feels sticky, tacky, or has become rough or flaky. This means the material is breaking down.
- When your toy has visible cracks, chips, or damage. This is especially important for glass and hard plastic toys.
- When your toy has a persistent strange smell that doesn't go away after cleaning.
- When your toy has discolouration or mould spots that won't shift.
- When the motor of the toy is weak, inconsistent, or making unusual sounds.
- If your toy is made from a porous material (TPE, Cyberskin): if you've had it for over a year and use it regularly, it's worth replacing regardless.
Cleaning and storing your toys properly isn't complicated once you get into the habit. A few minutes after play keeps things hygienic, extends the life of your toys, and means you can focus on the fun part every single time.
